On July 23, 2011, New Life North Ministries celebrated our 4th baptism at Oleta River State Park. Despite the unpredictable Miami weather, the Lord blessed this day with beautiful clear and sunny skies. As 9 am rolled around, the baptism group of 14 people arrived along with friends, family and church members. The worship team began singing “Our God is Greater” and the sound of worship drew everyone to the sea shore. As Pastor Rigo began praying for the baptism group they prayed and sang, “Set me on Fire, give me your desire, let me be a flame that burns for you & brings you joy!” One by one the men, women and teens entered the water symbolizing the death of their old life and the resurrection of their new life in Christ. As each person was prayed for, many were completely physically overwhelmed in the presence of God while other cried tears of brokenness, thankfulness and humility. I have attended many baptisms and I have never seen the presence of God in such a tangible, powerful expression.
I had the privilege of seeing my own father get baptized and he openly told me “I tried to fight it, but I just couldn’t.” In the presence of God there is only one thing to do, become undone, abandon yourself, surrender. This was a memorable baptism where I believe God is beginning a season of shattering in all of us in order to birth a flourishing newness of life.
